Etymology of the name Schiavon
Venice and the Dalmatia ones
The origin of our name Schiavon (as well as Schiavoni, Schiavone, or other) goes up in Venice of the Middle Age. Venitiens baptized us Schiavoni, and we adopted this nickname like our patronym. The name took then various consonnances.
Venice, prestigious city, Near the gulf which bears its name, in the north of the Adriatic Sea, significant corridor where the Dalmatian boats came to accost for their goods. This bank of the channel St Marc bears from now on the name which gave him the Venetian ones: Riva degli Schiavoni (bank of the esclavons).
At that time, the Dalmatia known ones, and whose patronym was of Slavic origin, were called by the Venetian ones: Schiavone or Schiavoni, of the name of their country of origin, Schiavonia. This nickname became their final Italian name, like Schiavon, as one can see it in the following examples(by René Teissier)
I found on Internet references to the fact that the name Schiavon comes from slave! "They sell without heart, future Slaves slaves to the Arab merchants. The "La Riva degli Schiavoni", of his true name, Dock of the slaves, in Venice east is one of the vestiges of this period ref:http://www.africamaat.com/".
I am not linguist, but, looking at everyone research, I believe that the term "riva degli schiavoni" does not mean "Dock of the slaves" because one would write in Italian "riva degli schiavi", but means well "Dock of the Slavons". Although into the Schiavoni, we find slaves as well as mercenaries, companies like the scuola degli Schiavoni or famous artists , this nickname refers to their country of origin (the Slavonia) and not to their state of slave. Do not mislead ourselves. If the Slavic word (Slavon) gave rise to the word slave (schiavo), that does not mean that the schiavoni (Slavons) of Veneto were inevitably slaves (Just look at Schiavona of Titien, 1511, at the end of this page, to realize it...) La Riva Degli Schiavoni , was probably built with the assistance of Slavons, slaves or not; bordered inter alia ships by Slaves sailors -slaves and Slavons; and was the witness of slave traffic of Slaves . So many good reasons to give it this name. But the word Schiavoni indicates above all: "the ones which come from Slavonia" (the sclavone or slavons).
It is my humble opinion and I wanted to share it with you. I am opened to commentaries. (MarieJo Schiavon)
Schiavon, a few celebrities
Schiavone, Andrea Meldola, Known as (about 1520-1563)
Schiavone Andrea, Italian painter
Andreï Medulich (or Andrija Medulic) known as Andrea Schiavone or Andrea Meldola de Hiadra, Italian magnerist painter and engraver (born in Zara or Zebenico, Dalmatie, before 1520- Venice 1-2-1563). First, student of Veronèse in Venice, he works from 1527 to 1530 in the workshop of the Parmesan in Bologna. After his establishment in Venice in 1541, he is encouraged and supported by Titien. He paints in majority compositions similar to reliefs, in tone progressively darkening as the evolution of its work. Let us quote its many tables not dated: Diane and Callisto (musée of Picardy, Amiens). Ref: Lelarge, Dictionaire de La Peinture Des Origines À nos jours.
Andrea Schiavone (~1500-1563) was born in Zadar or Nadin [ would be funny to know ]. He began his artistic career in Sibenik then in Venice. His works is disseminated in all Europe: Zadar, Sibenik, Zagreb, Venice, Milano, Florence, Naples, Torino, Paris, London, Oxford, Richmond, Dublin, Amsterdam.
Schiavone, Giorgo Chioulinovich, known as(1436-1504)
Italian Painter born in Scardona in Dalmatie. He was the pupil and the disciple faithful of Squarcione to Padoue, and tried to compete with Mantegna in the stressing of the anatomy and the archaeological richness (Polyptique of the virgin to the child, National Gallery- London). He multiplied rather banal Madonna, who must much in Philippo Lippi (Museum Correr-Venice-Rigksmuseum Amsterdam). As of 1642, it was back in Dalmatie, in Zara of access then in Sebenico, where he ends his life. He however seems still to have worked for the Italian churches, but the attribution of certain retables poses delicate problems. The museum Jacquemart-Andre in Paris, preserves of him a " Portrait d' Homme ", which counts as one of its best fabrics.
La Schiavona- the Dalmatian woman
Portrait of a Lady ('La Schiavona') about 1510-12
TITIAN about 1487 - 1576
Presented in through the National Art Collections Fund by Sir Francis Cook, Bt., in memory of his father, Sir Herbert Cook, Bt., 1942.
The painting, known by the 17th century as 'La Schiavona' , must date from 1510-12.
The initials T.V. on the parapet probably stand for Tiziano Vecellio. The raised portion of the parapet is a revision, and drapery originally painted there now shows through it. The profile relief, inspired by those on antique cameos, seems to be of the same sitter.
